What is GRA?
GRA (Gemological Research Association) is a certificate that accompanies moissanite stones and lists the stone’s specifications. It is important to know that it is not a report from an independent gemological lab like GIA for diamonds. It is an identification certificate that confirms the stone is moissanite and details its characteristics.
What does the certificate list?
- A unique certificate number.
- The shape, measurements and weight of the stone.
- Color grade, usually D to F (colorless).
- Clarity grade, for example VVS1.
- Cut, polish and symmetry.
How to verify the certificate
- Go to the GRA website and enter the certificate number. The details shown should match the piece you received.
- On some stones the number is laser-inscribed on the girdle (the edge of the stone). You can see it with a loupe or at a jeweler.
- For a full check, a jeweler can test the stone with a device that distinguishes moissanite from diamond by electrical conductivity.
What the certificate does not tell you
The certificate describes the stone only. It does not cover the metal of the piece, so it is important to also check that the silver is stamped 925. Most important of all: buy from a store you can contact if you have a question.
